Album Ricka Astleya "Free" z 1991 roku stanowił znaczące odejście od jego poprzedniego popowego brzmienia, ukazując bardziej dojrzałe i introspektywne oblicze artysty, który porusza tematy miłości, straty i rozwoju osobistego. Płytę wypełniła mieszkanka popu, soulu i wpływów R&B oraz gwiazdorską listę współpracowników, jak Elton John, Michael McDonald czy Mark Kin. Single "Cry for Help" czy "Move Right Out" urzekały emocjonalnym głosem Astleya i jego uduchowionym przekazem.
